A roof replacement day is an exciting step toward protecting your home, but proper preparation can make a big difference in how smoothly the project goes. Taking a few simple steps before our crew arrives helps protect your property, improves cleanup results, and ensures the installation process stays efficient from start to finish.
Below is a clear checklist to help you prepare your home before your scheduled roof replacement.
Clear the Area Around Your Home
Before we arrive, take time to move items away from the perimeter of your house. Roofing work involves removing old materials and installing new ones, which means debris may fall during the process.
We recommend moving the following items at least twenty feet away from your home:
- Patio furniture
- Grills
- Bird baths
- Flags or yard decorations
- Planters and outdoor accessories
Clearing these areas helps prevent accidental damage and gives our crew room to work safely.
Mow Your Lawn Before Installation Day
Please make sure your lawn is freshly cut before your roof replacement. The grass does not need to be extremely short, but keeping it around three to four inches tall makes a big difference during cleanup.
After installation, our team uses strong magnetic tools to collect nails and debris. Tall grass can hide small items, making them harder to remove. A trimmed lawn allows for a more thorough and effective cleanup around your home.
Protect Your Garage If the Ceiling Is Exposed
This step applies only to certain homes. Take a moment to check the ceiling inside your garage.
If your garage has a finished drywall ceiling, you do not need to do anything. However, if your garage has exposed rafters and you can see the roof decking from inside, additional precautions are recommended.
During roof replacement, small debris such as granules, dust, and tiny wood particles may fall through gaps or vent openings. To prevent mess or damage:
- Remove vehicles from the garage if possible
- Cover vehicles or motorcycles with tarps or sheets
- Cover stored items you want to keep clean
These steps help protect your belongings during the installation process.
Secure Fragile Items Inside Your Home
Roof replacement creates vibrations throughout the structure of your home. While this is normal, it can cause loosely mounted items to shift or fall.
Before installation day, walk through your home and check:
- Wall hangings
- Mirrors
- Framed photos
- Decorative shelving
- Porcelain or fragile items
If anything appears loosely hung or unstable, we recommend removing it temporarily. Taking these items down helps prevent accidental damage during the project.
Move Vehicles Out of the Driveway
On installation day, we will need access to your driveway to stage materials, equipment, and our dump trailer. Ideally, we require space equal to two vehicle lengths.
Please plan to:
- Move all vehicles out of the driveway
- Remove vehicles from the garage if you plan to use them during the day
- Park on the street or coordinate with neighbors if needed
If you have a large driveway, moving vehicles to one side may be sufficient. Clearing this space allows our crew to work efficiently and keeps the job site organized.
What to Expect on Installation Day
Once your home is prepared, our team will handle the rest. We focus on protecting your property, completing the installation efficiently, and performing a thorough cleanup at the end of the job.
If you have any questions before your roof replacement, we encourage you to contact our office or reach out directly to your sales representative or project supervisor.
